The definition of marketing is changing and until now, no one has been tracking where it's all going. Lines are blurring. Consumer clarity is low -in fact, tricking the consumer into thinking they are not being advertised to has become a legitimate tactic.
There are a variety of techniques being used to promote products, people and ideas. The industry undergone a dramatic shift in how these ideas are being presented to audiences. There are messages that we choose to accept (i.e. TV commercials, though Tivo has changed that a bit) and those that we either don't notice, aren't quite supposed to notice (a SONY laptop used by a criminal in the Miami Vice movie) or don't want to notice (i.e. spam email that goes ignored or immediately deleted but nevertheless you still get a branding dose of Cialis or Viagra).
